  • Kala namak is a kiln-fired indian volcanic rock salt used in
    South Asia with a sulphurous, pungent-smell. It is also known
    as “Himalayan black salt” and is manufactured from the salts
    mined in the regions surrounding the Himalayas. It starts out as
    Himalayan Pink Salt or sodium chloride and is then heated to
    extremely high temperatures and mixed with Indian spices and
    herbs incl. the seeds of the harad fruit which contains sulfur.

    Kala namak is used extensively in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal as a condiment or added to chaats, chutneys, salads, all kinds of fruits, raitas and many other savory Indian snacks. Chaat masala, an Indian spice blend, is dependent upon black salt for its characteristic sulfurous hard-boiled-egg aroma. While the color is
    special, it’s the unique aroma that sets kala namak apart
    from other varieties. This salt can be used to amplify sweet, sour, and fiery flavors in recipes.
